Do I need to use a different word for "these" if the group is all women?

In Modern Standard Arabic, hā'ulā'i is used for both masculine and feminine human plurals. It's a handy way to keep things simple!

Can I use "this" for something I can't touch but is close?

Yes! Distance in Arabic isn't just about physical contact. If something is in your immediate vicinity or part of your current conversation, hādhā or hādhihi works perfectly.

Why can't I just use the masculine plural for objects?

Arabic grammar treats all non-human plurals as a single collective feminine unit. Using the masculine plural for objects is grammatically incorrect in MSA.

Is there a difference between these words in dialects?

Absolutely. While we are focusing on Modern Standard Arabic here, if you travel to Egypt or the Levant, you'll hear different versions (like da or di). Stick to the MSA versions first to build a strong foundation.

How do I know if a word is masculine or feminine?

Most feminine words end in a ta marbuta (ة). However, there are exceptions like certain body parts (e.g., "hand" or yad) that are feminine. When in doubt, check a dictionary!
